The Estonian Literary Society was founded on August 6th, 1907. Within a short period of time, the society became a nationwide organisation, and by the late 1930s it had more than 2000 members. In 1940, the assets of the Society were nationalised and the Society was forced to end its activity. The Estonian Literary Society was officially re-established on December 18th, 1992, based on legal continuity and the redaction of the statutes of June 16th, 1940. The Estonian Literary Society is a private legal person, its board being in Tartu, Estonia.
The aim of the Estonian Literary Society is to promote the literature, scholarship and arts of Estonia, to study its country and people in all respects, and to render the results of this work accessible to the people. The Estonian Literary Society supports and coordinates research, educational activities and various other nationwide, regional and local events. The Society also supports and establishes libraries, archives, museums and other institutions in accordance with the objectives of the Society, publishes and distributes books, and develops collaboration with other organisations that that share its aims. Any physical or legal person who agrees to follow the statutes can become a member of the Estonian Literary Society. Membership is given according to the decision of the board of the Society, based on a signed personal application and written recommendations from at least two members of the Society. | | |
